A Memorial Mass for Mahlon Iverson, age 99, of Heron Lake will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake on Friday, March 20th at 11:00 AM, with a time of visitation and gathering for one-hour prior to the service. Military honors will be provided by the Sievert-Peterson American Legion Post #608.

Mahlon Arne Iverson was born on August 16, 1926, in Heron Lake, Minnesota, to Arne and Elizabeth (Sharp) Iverson. He was a lifelong man of faith and a devoted member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he also shared his faith by teaching religious education for many years.

Mahlon graduated from Heron Lake High School in 1944. Following graduation, he entered the United States Army, where he honorably served during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater on the island of Okinawa, attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, and served with the 31st Infantry, Company F. During his 18 months of overseas duty, Mahlon was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). After his discharge, he returned home to Heron Lake, where he dedicated himself to farming and later worked at Campbell Soup Company in Worthington.

In September of 1950, Mahlon was united in marriage to Bernadine Henkels. Together, they built a life centered on faith and family and were blessed with seven children: Bruce, Douglas, Mary, Cindy, Bradley, Daniel, and Mark. Mahlon was a devoted husband and father who took great pride in his family and cherished time spent together.

Music was a true joy in Mahlon's life. He loved both vocal and instrumental music and enjoyed playing the tuba and organ. His time with the Heron Lake German Band brought him many of his fondest memories. Mahlon was also a self-taught painter, known especially for his wildlife artwork, which he generously shared with his children and friends. In his leisure time, he enjoyed golfing with his sons and appreciated both the challenge of the game and the companionship it brought.

Mahlon lived independently for much of his 99 years, a reflection of his strength and determination. In recent years, he made his home at Heron Lake Assisted Living. On Saturday, March 14, 2026, Mahlon was called to his heavenly home, surrounded by the love of his family.

He is lovingly remembered by his children, Douglas (Cindy) Iverson, Mary (Bob) Mathias, Cindy (Tim) Sullivan, Bradley (Suzanne) Iverson, Daniel (Denise) Iverson, and Mark (Kari) Iverson; daughter-in-law, Doreen Iverson; 13 grandchildren, Alisha, Ashley, Matthew, Jennifer, Kathryn, Bridgette, Jacob, Joseph, Amanda, Sara, Thomas, Courtney, and Jack; as well as other relatives and friends.

Mahlon was preceded in death by his loving wife, Bernadine; eldest son, Bruce; and beloved grandson, Brian Mathias; parents, Arne and Elizabeth; and siblings, Alma, Alfred and Lillian.
