Marlis LeAnn Engen was born on June 13, 1940, to Harry and Signe (Gustad) Mattison at her home in Cottonwood County. She was baptized and confirmed at Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton. Marlis attended District 38 Country School for seven years and graduated from Lamberton High School in 1958. She attended Practical Nursing School in New Ulm, MN and received her certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
On September 12, 1959, Marlis was married to Roger Foss Engen at Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton. The marriage was blessed with four children, Kent, Diane, Laurie and Michele. Marlis was a homemaker and caregiver to many. She loved children and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marlis lived in rural Lamberton for most of her life, other than a short time during her childhood that she lived in Colorado Springs, CO. She accompanied Roger to Germany for about a year while he was in the army. She was an active member at church and was involved with Ladies Aid, sewing circle, kitchen band, and Sunday school. She enjoyed visiting and playing games with friends and family, square dancing, gardening, watching youth sporting events, and traveling.
Marlis is survived by her husband, Roger, of nearly 62 years; her children, Kent of Storden, MN; Diane & Kevin Determan of Jeffers, MN; Laurie & Pete Meidl of Prior Lake, MN; and Michele & David Thordson of Lamberton; eight grandchildren, Angel Uribe (David Knutson), Joslyn Nelson (Jimmy Richard-friend), Jacob (Nicole), Sam (Sammy-fiancé), Matt (Molly-fiancé), and Tommy Meidl, Mariah and Ryan Determan; seven great-grandchildren, Hailey and Josh Knutson, Chloe and Joey Nelson, Isabel, Victoria, and Eleanor Meidl; and sister Sandra Cutler of Maple Grove, MN.
Marlis was preceded in death by her parents, Signe & Harry Mattison; daughter-in-law, Amy Engen; and brother Wayne Mattison.

A Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Marlis Engen, age 81, of rural Lamberton, will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at 2:00 PM at Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton, with Pastor Michael Stangeland officiating. Burial will follow at the Highwater Lutheran Church Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Friday, September 10th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and one-hour prior to the service on Saturday, at the Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton.
Marlis Engen passed away peacefully at her home in rural Lamberton on Monday, September 6th.
