Martha Anna Baerg Goertzen was born on April 1, 1924. She gave her parents, Peter G and Anna Olfert Baerg an April Fools day smile, as there were already 4 brothers at home. She was later joined by a sister and lived on a farm north east of Delft. She attended grade school at Rural School District 16 North and high school in Bingham Lake. She graduated as the Valedictorian of her class in 1943. She was baptized upon confession of faith and joined the Immanuel Mennonite Church in Delft in May of 1940. After High School, Martha was a bookkeeper at the Delft Creamery and the Delft Elevator. She married Russell Goertzen in September of 1948. They moved to the Goertzen farm, where they lived until 2007 when they moved to Remick Ridge. As a farm wife Martha had many roles. She was the chief "go to town for parts" person, the reluctant "pull me out of the mud" person, as well as the creator of many noon meals, and the supplier of countless morning and afternoon coffee treats. She was active in the church as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and ladies' groups, taught VBS, and was faithfully involved with the Missions Society as they sewed and quilted for others. She kept a large garden and lovingly cared for her special roses. As a mother, she saw to it that her two daughters, Joyce and Ruth, knew how to cook and sew as well as do chores on the farm and in the house. Martha enjoyed traveling; although in the first years of farming, the trips were not very far from home. They included trips to the State Fair, or Twins game, or maybe a trip to see family. Later in life she and Russell were able to enjoy traveling a bit farther, and visited all but 3 states, visited several foreign countries and made numerous trips to Canada to be a part of the ministry at Frontier Lodge. She continued to use her skills in baking and quilting on those trips, also assuming the role of "Camp Grandma". In 2007 Martha and Russell transitioned to Remick Ridge. They were able to enjoy their time there until 2013 when poor health required that they move to the Good Samaritan Society Home, where she stayed until she transitioned to her final heavenly home on July 4, 2019. All of Martha's brothers and sister and their spouses have preceded her in death. Alvin and Anna Baerg, Abram and Susan Baerg, Pete and Betty Baerg, Ike and Ella Baerg, and Lyle and Lillian Bennett as well as one nephew, Robert Baerg. She is survived by her two daughters, Joyce (Doug) Ritchie of Rocky Mountain House, AB and Ruth (Rick) Earl of Austin, MN; five grandchildren: Kara and Cordell Friesen, Wainwright AB; Alyssa and Josh Barker, Rimbey, AB; Shawna and Brad Stirrett, Calgary, AB; Dan Kaufman, Boyden IA; and Mike and Rebecca Kaufman, Hampton VA; and 12 great grandchildren.
