Obituary

Martha Soehren was born July 28, 1923, the youngest of four sisters, to Hans and Emma (Hansen) Brugman. She grew up on the family farm in Delafield Township, where she remembers picking fruits and berries, canning vegetables, fishing in the creek and fixing tractors with her dad. Martha attended country school in Delafield Township and after 8th grade graduation she went to high school in Windom. Martha and her family moved to Windom during her high school years where she took shorthand, book-keeping and typing, taught Sunday School and helped in the church office. After graduation, she worked several years for Wynne's Hardware, where she learned many aspects of the business. Martha and her sisters enjoyed going to "Ag School" at the U of MN for a time. During the WWII years, Martha, two sisters and a cousin traveled to California where Martha worked for a lawyer. After coming back to Windom, she worked in a lawyers office and for the Extension Service, which was her favorite job. On January 25, 1948, Martha married Walter Soehren, whom she had met in confirmation classes and Walter League at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviors of Windom. During this time, they farmed in Delafield Township and David, Steven and Cynthia were born. In 1957, they moved to the Soehren homeplace in Christiania Township. Here Neil was born. She was always interested and involved in the farm life, especially the livestock and crops. Martha enjoyed flowers, especially her indoor Amaryllis and Christmas cactus, She enjoyed vegetable gardening and the outdoors. She was a wonderful cook for her family, friends and groups of hunters who gathered at her table. One of her favorite achievements was "1992 Jackson County Homemaker of the Year." She was a member and officer of Jackson County Extension Club for many years. Walter and Martha also enjoyed "Old Time" dances and polkas with friends. After Walter's death in 2005, Martha continued living on the farm until suffering a stroke in 2008. During her therapy, she lived for a time at the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial and Mikkelson Manor but recovered enough to return to the farm. Through the help of sons Neil and Steve, she was able to once again enjoy the farm; the seasons, harvest, the birds and wildlife. Always industrious, she assisted with freezing or canning vegetables and mending until shortly before entering the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial in April of 2021 where she passed away peacefully on January 24, 2022, at the age of 98 years. Martha was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior In Windom. Martha was preceded in death by her three sisters, Beatrice Lemickson, Thelma Thomas and Edna Brugman; parents, Hans and Emma Brugman; and husband, Walter. She leaves behind her four children, David (Dianna) Soehren of Appleton, MN, Steven Soehren of Windom, Cindy (Murray) Smart of Beardsley, MN and Neil Soehren of Windom; three grandchildren: Heather (Jacob) Jerzak of Black River Falls, WI, Meghan (Cory) Ohman of Hayfield, MN and Rudy Smart of Beardsley, MN; three great grandchildren: Olivia and Jared Jerzak and EllaMae Ohman; and many nieces and nephews.
