Marvin Henry Appel, son of Henry and Laura (Uhlken) Appel was born June 21, 1930, in Rost Township, Jackson County, MN. Marvin was baptized in St. John's Lutheran Church in Okabena and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakefield.
Marvin grew up on the family farm and attended country school, and later he attended Lakefield Public School through the 8th grade. Marvin then stayed at home to help his father on the farm.
Marvin worked for Kruse Drayline and later Culligan Water. He entered the Army and went into the Korean War as a platoon sergeant until he was honorably discharged a year later.
Marvin married Waunitta Grace Thompson on June 7, 1953, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Jackson, MN. Following the marriage, the couple resided in Lakefield and were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Marvin then went back to work at Culligan, Mosley Sheet Metal and Hugo Schultz Construction, later known as Kruse Paving, where he retired.
Marvin was a volunteer fireman for Lakefield Fire Department for 30 years. He was post commander and quartermaster & member of Lakefield VFW, where he started the smelt, bullhead, and steak feeds. He was also a member of the American Legion.
He later enjoyed delivering meals on wheels for Lakefield Meal Site. Some of his other interests were cooking, gardening, and baking for his family and friends.
Marvin passed away at home peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023, at 92 years old.
Marvin is survived by his three children, Debra (Wade) Salzwedel of Lakefield, Dawn (Mike) Rossow of Lakefield, and Brad (Kim) Appel of Fairmont; nine grandchildren, Jason Rossow, Jeremy Rossow, Heather (Rod) Hawkins, Mason (Jackie) Salzwedel, Brandi (Jesse) Larson, Tara (Jeremy) Boogerd, Shawna Appel, Melissa (Ernie) Minton, and Kendra (Jacob) Petersen; twelve great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Waunitta; his parents and in-laws; son, Dennis Appel; grandson, Justin Salzwedel; brother, Myron and his wife, Mary Lou Appel; sister, Lorraine and her husband, Ed Carlson; brother-in-law, Merle and his wife, Cathy Thompson; and sister-in-law, Jurene and her husband, Ray Roslansky.
