Melvin Wojahn was born on his family farm east of Comfrey, MN on January 21, 1930. He was the third of eight children born to Julius and Anna (Kleinow) Wojahn. The family moved to the Windom farm on Highway 71 in 1931. Melvin was baptized at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior and graduated from Windom Schools in 1948. After graduation, he spent time in Washington and Oregon and contemplated staying to work in the lumber camps but was eventually drawn back to a life in Windom. He married the love of his life, Romelle Schneider, on September 28, 1952. They moved to a farm north of Windom, just a few miles away from his family farm, and were married for almost 68 years. They joined the American Lutheran Church and remained active members. Melvin spent several of his early farming years working for the local veterinarian, particularly working with cattle in the vaccination programs, and he became known as a trusted and reliable hand. He also started a custom baling and silo filling service which he ran into the 1970's. During the latter part of the summer, it was not uncommon to find him baling flax in the morning, alfalfa in the middle of the day, and straw in the evening. Melvin was an active member of the Windom area community. He served in several leadership roles, including the Windom Co-op Elevator Board of Directors, the Land O' Lakes Board of Directors, Cottonwood County Fair Association, and he was instrumental in forming and chairing the Southwest Minnesota Agri-Fuels Cooperative, later guiding construction of the ethanol plant known today as POET Bingham Lake. He was an organizer of the first Windom Ag Day celebration, which is now the Windom Chamber's Farm and Home Show. Music was always a part of Melvin's life; family remembers him singing with the men in the living room to entertain the women as they prepared the meals. He was a charter member of the Windom Area Chordhustlers and sang in the ALC Men's Chorus. Melvin and Romelle were active members of Sons of Norway, Ski for Light, and Friends of Foreign Students, hosting several students from other countries. Melvin and Romelle loved to travel whenever they could. Seeing family was first on their travel list, but they were known for making friends and good conversation wherever they stopped. Melvin farmed with his son for many years, raising both livestock and crops. Later in life, he focused on crop farming, collecting toy tractors, and rebuilding old family tractors and classic cars. His descendants enjoyed taking rides in his lovingly restored 1964 Sunbeam and his 1929 Ford Model A. More recently, winters in Texas proved to be a welcome respite from the winter cold where he enjoyed reading in the sunshine, tinkering, going for walks, and singing with a local barbershop group. Melvin and Romelle moved to Ecumen Meadows in Worthington in 2019, where they enjoyed new friendships, excellent meals, and care from the attentive staff. He passed away on July 14, 2021, surrounded by friends and family at the Sogge Home in Windom. Melvin was preceded in death by his father Julius and mother Anna, two sisters and three brothers, three brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law. Surviving him are his wife Romelle, son Michael (Karen) Wojahn of Windom and daughters Rhonda (Greg) Swanson of Brentwood, TN, and Ruth Johnson (Rick Sebenoler) of Blanco, TX, son-in-law Kevin Johnson of Austin, TX, brother Orville (Jan) Wojahn of Windom, sister Caroline (Wes) Strausser of Welcome, two sisters-in-law, Joanne Wojahn of Little Canada and Betty Schneider of Spicer. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Paul (Jeni) Wojahn and their children Allison and Katelyn, Britta (Jesse) Bergland and their children Willa and Isabel, Elizabeth (Michael) Feltes and their children Gwendolyn, Vivian and Jonathan, Megan (Jack) Dwyer and their children Cole and Hudson, Emily Wojahn and fiancé Andrew Small, and Erik Swanson. He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and their families.
