Obituary

Mildred L. Roll, daughter of Andrew C. Harless and Zella Smith Harless, was born in Clark County, Iowa on November 30, 1908. Her father died in 1915 and she moved to Rock Valley, Iowa with her mother and sister. In 1918, her mother remarried and Mildred was adopted by her step-father, Peter Van Horssen. The family moved to Bingham Lake, Minnesota where she attended school. She married Bruno Roll on February 14, 1927 at the Methodist parsonage in Windom with the Rev. Babcock officiating. They had one son, Robert, who died in 1951 in a traffic accident in California while serving with the U.S. Air Force. Mildred and Bruno farmed near Bingham Lake, Windom, Fulda, Mountain Lake and Jeffers. After his death in 1964, she moved to Windom. Mildred moved into the Sogge Memorial Good Samaritan Society in Windom in May 2005 where she lived until her death on April 24, 2010 at the age of 101. She was always interested in people, generous, and ready to help others. She loved animals and enjoyed caring for her pets, sometimes taking in strays or adopting pets others could no longer keep. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Terena Bottema of Bingham Lake and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruno; son, Robert; sister, Elma and husband, Henry Roll; and brothers-in law & sisters-in-law, John and Bernice Roll, Harry and Jennie Dunkelberger, Orville and Gertie Dunkelberger, and Ben Bottema. Blessed be the memory of Mildred Roll.
