Milton Duane Van Norman was born on September 12, 1931 in Great Bend Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. He was the son of Glenn and Julia (Eldridge) Van Norman. He received his early education in rural Cottonwood County Schools and graduated from Windom High School in the class of 1949. Duane was a member of the National Guard (47th Infantry Division) and served with his unit at Camp Rucker in Dothan, Alabama during the Korean War and he was honorably discharged. On June 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Weinzetl and they made Windom their home during their entire marriage. Duane was an avid photographer and organized and was president of a local photography club. He bowled in two bowling leagues for over 50 years and served as league secretary. Duane was a Boy Scout den leader and served as scout master of Troop 37 during his sons scouting years. Duane enjoyed carving duck decoys and sharing them with his family and was well known in the area for repairing glassware and selling antiques. Faith and family were important to Duane and he was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church where he served as an usher and was on several committees. Duane was also a member of the American Legion Post 206 in Windom. On January 21, 2019, Duane passed away at his home in Windom at the age of 87 years. Duane is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Neal Van Norman; one sister, Lois Ahrens; brother-in-law, Jerry Ahrens; two sisters-in-law, LaVon Van Norman and Marie Van Norman; one daughter-in-law, Diana Van Norman; and a nephew, Larry Van Norman. Duane is survived by his wife of 63 years, JoAnn Van Norman of Windom; his children, Lyndon Van Norman of High Falls, NY; Vicki (Jim) Anderson of Windom; Mitch (Barbara) Van Norman of Windom; Kristi (Brian) Hedman of Windom; Jill (Jeff) Slater of Buzzards Bay, MA; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Lee Van Norman of Coon Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
