Obituary

Orin (Ozzie) Leroy Ostenson was born on January 27, 1927 in Granite Falls, Minnesota to the late Osten and Alvina (Johnson) Ostenson. Ozzie received his education in Granite Falls, Minnesota, graduating with the class of 1945. Although he had a job all through high school, Ozzie still managed to play football and hockey. Eager to serve his country during WWII, Ozzie joined the United States Navy when he turned eighteen in 1945, four months before he graduated. There was an empty chair in his place at his high school graduation. Ozzie served aboard the aircraft carrier the U.S.S. WASP. Ozzie was extremely proud of his Navy career and often spoke of his experiences during that time. When Ozzie returned from the war, he married his high school sweetheart Virginia I. Volstad on April 8, 1947. At the time of Virgie's death in 2010 they had been married 63 years. Ozzie and Virgie made a great team; together they built a successful business and raised three children, Jim, Mary Kay and Lori. Ozzie started his retail career as an assistant manager of a J.C. Penney store in Appleton, Minnesota and Federated Dept. Store in Granite Falls, Minnesota. Ozzie and Virgie moved to Windom in 1957 when they bought a variety store. Together they expanded the store into ladies and children's clothing and gifts. Ostenson's and the Village Shop were in business for thirty-three years until Virgie and Ozzie retired in 1990. They thoroughly enjoyed owning the store and remained good friends with all of their dedicated employees. Accepting Jesus Christ as his savior at a young age, Ozzie was a man of strong faith. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Windom where he served for many years as a trustee. He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Board, Kiwanis and Golden K's. Ozzie will always be remembered as a man who loved people and getting to know them better. He enjoyed talking to everyone and quickly made friends wherever he went. Ozzie enjoyed golfing, hunting, ping pong, biking and gardening. He was a wonderful grandfather who sat through many t-ball, football and basketball games, tennis meets and recitals. Orin was a devoted husband who lovingly took care of Virgie during her last four years of life. After his wife's death, Ozzie moved to Parkwood Shores in St. Louis Park, Minnesota to be near his son, Jim. Being in the Twin Cities gave him many opportunities to see his grandchildren. Ozzie especially enjoyed singing with his grandson, Ben. He became a favorite resident of the staff at Parkwood Shores - everyone knew Ozzie. He died peacefully in his apartment on March 12, 2012 at the age of 85 years. Ozzie is survived by his loving family; sister, Ovidia Hegna of Alexandria, Minnesota; his son, James (Patty) Ostenson of Edina, Minnesota; his daughter Lori (David) Johnson of Windom; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; Andrea (Duane) Sollie and their children, Ella, Greta and Torsten, Michael (Lisa) Ostenson, Kaitlin Miller, Rebekah (Steve) Anderson, Megan Miller, and Benjamin and Daniel Johnson; a niece Lynette (Curt) Johnson, cousins and many friends. Ozzie is preceded in death by his parents, Osten and Alvina Ostenson; his wife, Virginia, his daughter, Mary Kay Miller, a brother-in-law, Jerald Hegna and a nephew, Jerry Hegna. Blessed be the memory of Orin "Ozzie" Ostenson.
