Orlo Ray Bennett was born on April 25, 1929, on the Lester Farm in Martin County, Minnesota to the late Roy Austin and Ida Pearl (McDonald) Bennett. In March of 1935, they moved to the home farm near Bergen. Orlo was baptized in Windom and received his education there; graduating in the Class of 1949. "Scottish" as he was known to many in his younger years, enlisted in the National Guards-47th Infantry Division as a Motor Sergeant in the Windom Unit and was stationed at Camp Rucker, Alabama. He was later honorably discharged. On January 4, 1951, Orlo was united in marriage to Ruby Wolff at the Baptist parsonage in Windom. In 1956, they moved to Lakefield. Through the years, Orlo worked for Bennett Trucking, farmed, sold campers and toppers, worked at TORO for 21 years and for the FCA Co-op out of Lakefield in his later years. In 2010, Orlo suffered a stroke and was a resident of the Colonial Manor in Lakefield before going home to live for the past four years and ten months. It was there that he passed away on Friday evening, March 2, 2018, at the age of 88 years. Orlo was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Lakefield where he ushered and was a church trustee. He also was a member of the Lakefield American Legion Post for 59 years where he was past commander. Orlo was in many parades through the years with his campers or marching with the American Legion. He worked Legion bingo on Saturday nights along with being a blood donor. In his spare time, later in life, Orlo enjoyed wood working, creating many different wood pieces for outside the house. He enjoyed gardening and many hours of playing cards. Orlo is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Ruby Bennett of Lakefield; four children, Gail Dick of Windom; Bonnie Hunter of Fairmont; David (Aggie) Bennett of Mt. Lake; Nancy Goodwin of Robbinsdale; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; brother and sisters, Wayne (Lucy) Bennett of Windom; Adella (Allen) Espelien of St. Cloud; Raymond Bennett of the Twin Cities; Phyllis (Fred) Buck of Denver, CO; Margaret Greig of San Jose, CA; sister-in-law, Elisabeth Bennett of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy Jr., Chester, Warren, Glen, Earle and Lyle Bennett; sisters, Veva Stevens and Willa Muir.
