Richard "Dick" & Joanne

JoAnne Louise (Schaffer) Spada was born on June 30, 1947, to Paul and LaVerna (Haberman) Schaffer, in Heron Lake, Minnesota. JoAnne attended school at Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Heron Lake High School in 1965. After graduation, JoAnne received a cosmetology license and worked in several salons, including with her brother, Clayton, in his salon in Heron Lake. JoAnne was later employed in a pharmacy and then worked as a secretary at a car dealership until her retirement.
Richard "Dick" Norman Spada was born on November 6, 1945, to Norman and Eileen (Bach) Spada, in Richfield, Minnesota. Dick graduated from Richfield High School in 1964. Dick proudly served in the United States Navy. He attended college at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dick was employed as an on-the-road salesman for several companies and later worked as a school custodian, until his retirement.
On October 17, 1970, Dick and JoAnne were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Church in Heron Lake and enjoyed 52 years of marriage. Dick and JoAnne owned and operated the Mel-O-D Lanes bowling alley and café, in Heron Lake from 1972-1979. They moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota in 1979. After 43 years in the Twin Cities, they moved to Fort Meyers, Florida, in April 2022, to enjoy the Sunshine State.
JoAnne was an amazing wife, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved Dick and her family fiercely. Dick was known for his cheerful personality and positive attitude. He enjoyed visiting with his nieces and nephews and often shared his advice and life lessons with them. Dick and JoAnne did not have children of their own but thought of their nieces and nephews as their own. They looked forward to taking yearly trips to Florida, Dominican Republic, and various parts of Mexico, where they could relax in the warm weather and sunshine.
JoAnne passed away on October 8, 2022, at their home in Fort Meyers, at the age of 75, with Dick by her side. On May 10, 2023, with family by his side, Dick passed away at the Hope Hospice Center in Fort Meyers, at the age of 77.
JoAnne is survived by her brother, Daniel (Irina) Schaffer of Chesapeake, Virginia; her sister, Karen (Gerard) Weinandt of Brewster, Minnesota; 7 nieces and 1 nephew; 7 great-nieces and 11 great nephews; and one great-great-niece. JoAnne was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clayton (Myrna) Schaffer, and James (Diane) Schaffer.
Dick is survived by his brother, Dennis (Janet) Spada of Monee, Illinois; his sister, Carol (Patrick) Cronin of Palos Hills, Illinois; 2 nephews; 3 great-nieces and 2 great-nephews; and one great-great-niece. Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Patricia Spada.
JoAnne and Dick will be laid to rest in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Heron Lake, Minnesota. Blessed be the memory of Richard Norman Spada and Joanne Louise Spada.
A celebration of life memorial event will be held for Richard "Dick" and JoAnne Spada, of Fort Meyers, Florida, formerly of Heron Lake, MN, on Saturday, June 10th from 12:00-3:00 p.m. at the Heron Lake Community Center in Heron Lake. The memorial will include a time of gathering and visitation with a light lunch available. The burial will be held on Sunday, June 11th at 1:00 PM at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Heron Lake.
Dick Spada passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 10th, at the Hope Hospice in Fort Meyers, Florida. JoAnne passed away on October 18th, 2022, at her home in Fort Meyers, Florida, with Dick by her side.
