A Celebration of Life Service to honor the life and legacy of Richard Horkey age 77, of Westbrook, will be held Thursday, May 22nd at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church ELCA in Westbrook. Military honors will be provided by the Westbrook American Legion and VFW. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in rural Westbrook.

A visitation for Richard will be held on Wednesday, May 21st from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the LaCanne Family Celebration of Life Center in Windom. Visitation will continue Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church ELCA in Westbrook for one hour prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated to charitable organizations of the family's choice.

Richard Lee Horkey passed away Thursday, May 15, 2025, at the Good Samaritan Society, Sogge Memorial in Windom, Minnesota after a courageous battle with Parkinsons.

He was born on April 15, 1948, at the Windom Hospital, to Floyd and Alice (Stoever) Horkey. He grew up on the family farm six miles south of Westbrook. He was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 1966.

Richard enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas. He served during the Vietnam War in the 452nd General Supply Company. He was honorably discharged in June of 1969 and started farming with his parents.

On October 25, 1969, Richard was united in marriage to Vicky Sue Haack. The couple was blessed with four children. On the family farm, they raised quarter horses, sheep, cattle, pigs and goats. Although he started out farming, his career transitioned to hauling livestock and grain. He was the proud owner/operator of his own trucking company.

Richard was passionate about raising, showing and trading Quarter Horses. Showing horses was a family affair throughout the summer. He enjoyed passing his knowledge of horses on to his children and watching them show. He also enjoyed the annual family deer hunting weekends with his son, brother, and nephews but especially loved it when his grandsons were old enough to join them. He was a proud father and grandfather and enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting and school events.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Vicky Horkey of Windom; four children, Chad (Julie) Horkey of Pine Island, Stacy (Eric) Schettler of Sherburn, Jennifer (Chad) Bakke of New Prague, and Pamela Hogan of Windom; seven grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Horkey, Noah and Emily Schettler, Lyla Bakke, and Madilyn and Adison Hogan; brother, Gary (Rita) Horkey; sister, Judy (Dean) Schumacher; aunt Betty Whiteford; mother-in-law, Gladys Haack; several brothers and sisters- in-law; nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Alice Horkey; grandson, Eli Schettler; father-in-law, Lowell Haack and sister-in-law Earlene Horkey.
