Obituary

Robert (Bob) Philip Byers was born September 23, 1933, in Austin, Minnesota to Philip and Margaret Byers. He was baptized at the Methodist Church in Fairmont, MN where he was later confirmed. He attended elementary through high school at Fairmont, MN. It was in 10th grade English class where Bob met Audrey Engquist. They graduated together in 1951. After high school, Bob attended the School of Pharmacy at SDSU in Brookings, SD. On December 26, 1954, Bob and Audrey were united in marriage at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. After Bob's pharmacy graduation in 1955, they moved to Clark, SD, where Bob was employed at Knutson Drug. Several years later, Bruce Robert was born. Soon after Bob took a pharmacist job at Lewis Drug in Sioux Falls, where they lived for nine years. During that time, daughter Carol Ann was born. In November 1966, Bob and Audrey purchased Bordie Olson's Drug Store in Windom and proudly renamed the new business "Byers Pharmacy". In April 1975, their new Walgreens Byers Drug Store building was built. Bob and Audrey always considered their customers and employees as their good friends. During Bob's career, he often helped his fellow pharmacists by doing relief work in Jackson, Lakefield, Mt. Lake, and Comfrey. In 1994, Bob and Audrey's "independent, locally-owned" Windom drug store era came to an end when Byers Buy-Rite Drug Store sold their inventory to Pamida Pharmacy in Windom, and the building was sold to Cottonwood County. Bob worked several more years at Pamida Pharmacy before retiring. Bob and Audrey were blessed to celebrate 60 years of marriage. In 2015, Audrey passed away, leaving a huge void. However, the Lord works in wonderful ways to heal the passing of a loved one. Bob met and began a special loving friendship with LaVonne Donahue, which continued until Bob's death on Sunday August 21, 2022, at Windom Area Health at the age of 88 years and 11 months. Bob was a long-time member of the American Lutheran Church where he served as a trustee and usher and participated in Bible study. Bob especially cherished the friends that worshiped with him on Saturday evenings. During his life, Bob was a registered pharmacist for 42 years, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Eagles Flying Club, and Bald Eagles civic group. Bob was a regular diner at the "Community Center" where he enjoyed the camaraderie, as much as the food. Bob kept up with computer technology, enjoyed being with family and friends and had a long-lasting love of cars. Bob had a wonderful smile and warm personality and will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit. Bob is survived by his daughter, Carol Byers Schroeder (Randy) of Morgan, MN; daughter-in-law, Linda Byers Bonnell (Steve) of Milford IA; special friend, LaVonne Donahue of Windom; four grandchildren, Brent Byers (Beth) of Mankato, MN, Michelle Byers (A.J. Madison) of Inver Grove Heights, MN, Dan Schroeder (Kristen) of St. Cloud, MN, and Kyle Schroeder of St. Cloud, MN; five great-grandchildren, Kaylin, Evelynn and Josie Madison of Inver Grove Heights, MN, and Ruby and Fletcher Byers of Mankato MN; sister-in-law, Joan Engquist of Fairmont, MN; nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Audrey; son, Bruce; sister, Joyce Byers Reed; brother-in-law, Thomas C. Reed; and brother-in-law, Howard Engquist. Blessed be his memory.
