Roberta "Buzzy" Elinor (Grantz) Flatgard was born on October 22, 1938, to the late Robert and Catharine (Willis) Grantz, in Jackson, Minnesota, on the family farm on Loon Lake in Middletown Township. Buzzy was baptized in May 1954 at the First Methodist Church in Jackson and was later confirmed there. Her early education was completed at country school, Jackson County District 55. She attended and graduated from Jackson High School in the class of 1956. Following high school, she attended college in Mankato, earning a degree in bookkeeping/accounting.
On August 7, 1964, Buzzy was united in marriage to Donavan "Shorty" Flatgard, at the First Methodist Church in Jackson, and became longtime members of the American Lutheran Church in Windom. The marriage was blessed with one son, Scott. Buzzy was a champion golfer and bowler. She enjoyed watching NASCAR and spent time planting flowers. She loved visiting with her friends.
Buzzy was active in the community. She was the president of the American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary, Secretary and Treasurer of the Eagle's Club, and a Red Hatter. She was awarded the distinguished 2013 Mayor's Medal of Honor "Services by Senior Citizens".
She worked as a secretary and a salesclerk for most of her employment. After working at Federated Rural Electric Association in Jackson, Buzzy was employed in Windom with Caldwell Packing, Windom Motel (1972-1987), The Village Shop (1988-1990), La Boutique (1990-2000), and Duebers (2001-2005).
Buzzy Flatgard passed away peacefully on Friday, May 26th at Lyons Specialty Care in Rock Rapids, IA.
Left to cherish Buzzy's memory are her son, Scott Flatgard (fiancé, John Thuringer) of Sioux Falls, SD; 9 nieces, 3 nephews, 11 great-nieces, 10 great-nephews; and many relatives and dear friends.
Buzzy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Donavan "Shorty" Flatgard; son-in-law, Chris Smith; her parents, Robert and Catharine Grantz; sisters, Laila "Bunny" Schroeder, and Margaret "Mickey" Giffin; 3 nieces and 5 nephews.
Blessed be the memory of Buzzy Flatgard.
