Roxie Marie Grandprey was born on July 18, 1931, in Mason City, Iowa to the late Milo Edwin Helmts and Rachel Louise (Medley) Smith. She was baptized in 1943 at the Baptist Church in Mankato, Minnesota, and later confirmed in that same church. Roxie received her education in the Mankato Schools; graduating from Mankato High School in the Class of 1948. She then furthered her education at Mankato State Teacher's College where she majored in Physical Education and Health, and minored in English and History. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1952. On August 22, 1954, Roxie was united in marriage to Loie Ralph Grandprey in Mankato, Minnesota. This marriage was blessed with three children, Lee, Jay and Susan. Roxie has been a teacher for most of her life. In 1952, she began her teaching career in Morris. She continued on to teach in Harmony from 1954-55 and Lakefield from 1955-57. Roxie was a substitute teacher in Windom Schools for many years to come. Roxie was very involved at the Windom Pool. She was a lifeguard, swimming instructor and pool manager. In the winter months, she was a skating instructor, as well as, the director of the figure skating program at the Windom Arena. Roxie was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Windom where she was a member of the Women's Circle and a Deacon. Roxie was very involved in her community. She was a founding stock holder of the Home for Creative Living, and an active board member. She was also a member of the Windom Quilting Club. Roxie was committed to volunteering her time to the English as a Second Language Program. Her passion in life was to help those in need. Roxie had many enjoyments in her life. In her younger years, she was a Girl Scout leader and camp counselor. Roxie was an avid knitter, quilter, and reader. She had a love for travel, English Royalty, and her English Springer Spaniels. Most of all, Roxie enjoyed spending time with her friends and family; especially her four granddaughters, Emily, Brianna, Lexi and Rachel. Roxie spent her final days in her home in hospice care. She peacefully went to heaven with her loved ones by her side. Roxie is survived by her husband of sixty years, Loie Ralph Grandprey of Windom; three children, Lee Grandprey and his wife, Jan, of San Diego, CA; Jay Grandprey of Windom; Susan Grandprey Anundson and her husband, David, of Maple Grove; four granddaughters, Emily Grandprey (23) of Sioux Falls, SD; Brianna Grandprey (20) of Sioux Falls, SD; Lexi Anundson (18) of Maple Grove; Rachel Anundson (14) of Maple Grove; and many more friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by parents. Memorials are preferred.
