Ruby Lee Benson was born on April 15, 1922 to Iver O. and Jennie Marie Johnson Lee in Clarkfield, MN. She was baptized on May 7, 1922 at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Clarkfield and was confirmed May 2, 1937 in the same church. She graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1940.
She was involved in several places of business in Minneapolis before becoming cashier at Becky's Cafeteria where she worked for several years. Ruby met Roger while he was attending the University of Minnesota and they were married June 15, 1947 in Clarkfield. In 1947 they moved from Minneapolis to Algona, IA where their son, Michael was born. In 1950 they moved to Windom where Catharine was born in 1952.
Ruby was active in her church all her life having taught Sunday school for 19 years, belonged to WELCA, Circles, Library Board and was a charter member of Altar Guild and took part in volunteer work when needed. For thirty six years she was an employee of Benson Office Supply as bookkeeper and cashier. She was a member of Mrs. Jaycees when it was first started in Windom and also of the Town and County Garden Club. After retirement she continued her volunteer work by becoming an RSVP member. Her special interests were in cooking and baking and also enjoyed flower gardening and bird watching, knitting baby sweaters for Lutheran Welfare plus her relaxation time with her Friendship Group. She loved her Lord, her family and home above all else. Her faith and trust in the Lord and the love of her family kept her going after the death of Roger in 2000.
In November of 2015, Ruby became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where she passed away peacefully on Monday, February 27, 2017 at the age of 94 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roger Benson; four brothers, Ordean, Myron, Merlyn and Robert; two sisters, Erma and one infant sister.
She is survived by her son, Michael Benson and his wife Billie of the Dominican Republic; daughter, Catharine Veenker and her husband Ronald of Bingham Lake; five grandchildren, John (Staci) Veenker, Amy (Steve) Gould, Scott (Aimee) Veenker, Lizzie (Carlos) Benson-Fragio, and Gloria Benson. Also nine great-grandchildren, Danielle, William and Katya Gould (Tyler Klassen), Jenna, Hailey and Jackson Veenker, Claire and Benjamin Veenker, and Mikeas Fragio-Benson one sister, Alida Forbord of Clarkfield, MN; many nieces, nephews and many cousins in Norway.
