Obituary

Selma "Sally" Gohman was born in Rose Grove Township, Hamilton County, Iowa on June 30, 1926 to the late Marselius and Kristofa (Osaland) Holt. In 1930, the family moved to a farm just north of Windom. Sally attended Windom Public Schools, graduating from Windom High School in 1944. A short time after high school, Sally rented part of a house in Windom and worked a few years at Lewis Drug Store in Windom. On August 6, 1950, Sally was united in marriage to Alton Gohman at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. This marriage was blessed with three sons, David, Paul and John. In the early years of their marriage, Alton and Sally rented two farms around the Windom area, at separate times. They parted ways with farming in 1967 and moved into Windom. Sally began working as a clerk at the Windom Rexall Drug Store, then eventually working at Northside Drug on the square in Windom. She spent 23 years forming friendships and helping people at the two drug stores, before retiring in December of 1990. During the early retirement years, Alton and Sally spent the winter months living in Harlingen, Texas for ten years. On September 10, 2014, Alton passed away suddenly at home at the age of 89. Sally continued to live on her own in the house until mid-April of this year when failing health landed her in the Windom Area Health hospital. She spent her last two days at the Good Samaritan Society – Sogge Memorial in Windom, where she passed away peacefully on April 22, 2021, at the age of 94. Sally was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Windom where she was a Sunday School Secretary for a number of years in the 1970s. In her younger years, Sally enjoyed playing sports. She was the captain of the Windom Women's Softball Team in the late 1940s. Windom played other teams from surrounding towns. In retirement years, Sally kept busy with a variety of crafts, and sometimes sold her goods at craft fairs, and often gave away her crafts to friends and family. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren's events, watching game shows and the Minnesota Twins on TV, and playing card games. She will be remembered as a sweet and friendly woman who cared deeply for her family and friends. Sally is survived by two of her sons and their wives, David (Patti) Gohman of Orange City, Iowa; John (Shannon) Gohman of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Nathaniel, Andrew (Stephanie Everly), Austin and Leah; and many nieces and nephews. Sally was preceded in death by her parents; husband Alton Gohman; one son, Paul; three brothers, Joseph, Mervin, and Selmer Holt; three sisters, Clara Tasler, Alma Bohling, and Gladys Thomsen.
