Sheryl (Rutledge) Engler was born on July 31, 1947, in Lake City, Iowa to the late Leo and Mabel (Cobberman) Rutledge. She received her education in Spencer, Iowa and graduated high school there. After high school, Sheryl attended college and received her degree as a nurse's assistant. She then moved to Windom where she worked at the Windom Area Hospital as a nurse's assistant. Later, she worked for Western Community Action for many years. On February 2, 1985, Sheryl married her best friend, Lonn Engler at the American Lutheran Church in Windom. This union blessed Lonn with three stepchildren: Chris, Kevin, and Karla. They raised the kids together and became a very close family. Sheryl was very well known as the "Cake Lady' as she had made many birthdays, graduation, baptism, retirement, and wedding cakes. In 1993, Lonn and Sheryl decided to take on a new adventure as owner/operators of the Green Roof Lodge Resort on Women Lake in Hackensack, Minnesota. Sheryl then became known as the "Pie Lady" with her award-winning apple pies. She had sold up to 4,000 pies in one year alone. There were so many fans of her apple pies, she decided to make a cookbook with all her favorite recipes and sold many through the resort. Lonn and Sheryl decided to move back to the Windom area in 2010 to be closer to family. Sheryl became a Food Service Representative for Forner Bachen/Core Mark until covid, where her job was eliminated. She was going to embrace the retirement world, but as we all know, Sheryl was not meant to be still and needed to stay busy. Shortly before her surgery, she began a job at the Jackson Headstart Program and worked with young children. Everyone that met Sheryl knew right from the get-go, she was an outgoing, hardworking, determined women that could socialize with anyone. She loved people. She was known for her delicious and beautifully crafted bakery good and dishes. She loved music, singing, dancing, fishing, camping, traveling and going to Broadway plays. She was dedicated to taking care of herself and faithfully walked everyday if not outside, on her treadmill. Most importantly she loved spending time with family and friends. Sheryl was a fighter. After complications from surgery on February 9, 2021, her health continued to decline. Sheryl passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, March 21, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society Sogge Memorial in Windom. Left to cherish Sheryl's everlasting memory is her husband, Lonn Engler; father and mother-in-law, Marley, and Dixie Engler; children, Chris (Brad) Anderson, Kevin (Nikki) Axtell, Karla (Roger) Ambrose; brother, Denny (Karen) Rutledge; grandkids, Ashley (Tamas) Szasz, Megan (Chase) Carlson, Cassie Axtell, Dillion Axtell, Samantha Axtell, Katelynn Axtell, Danielle Ambrose, Jessica Ambrose; great grandkids, Aiden Szasz, Kayson Szasz and Olivia Albright. Sheryl is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Mable Rutledge; sister, Marilyn Wilson and her grandparents.
