Obituary

Sophie Meyer Stoterau was born to Roelf Heinrick and Jurendien (Gammais) Meyer on December 14, 1932 in Bloom Township, Nobles County, MN. She was baptized on February 5, 1933 and confirmed on March 30, 1947 at Immanuel American Lutheran in Fulda, MN. She attended country school in the Fulda area until the eighth grade, then attended Fulda High School, graduating with the Class of 1951. After graduation, Sophie worked in Slayton at Muesing Drug Store and the S & L Store. Sophie was united in marriage to Merlin "Mike" Ray Stoterau on April 8, 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bloom Township. The marriage was blessed with children, and they raised their family and farmed together in the Slayton area until 1968, when they moved to Comfrey, MN. They continued farming in Delton Township, Comfrey, MN until 1997 and then moved to Jeffers. Merlin passed away on November 5, 2007 at the Westbrook Hospital. Sophie was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. She belonged to the Ladies Aid and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #401, serving as president for three years. She loved playing cards at the Senior Center. Some of Sophie's hobbies include crocheting, gardening, watching western movies and driving her golf cart around Jeffers. Sophie also loved crocheting hats for her grandkids. Sophie is survived by three children, Conrad (Diane) Stoterau of Eagle Bend, MN; Duane Stoterau of Jeffers, MN; and Betty (Kevin) Oeltjenbruns of Mountain Lake, MN; five grandchildren, Arin (Jared) Spindler of Alexandria, MN; Michael Stoterau of Fargo, ND; Rachel (Dexter) Pomeranz of Eagle Bend, MN; Stephanie (Rod Ward) Oeltjenbruns of Bruce, South Dakota; and Cody (Sammy) Oeltjenbruns of Comfrey, MN; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Jill Meyer of Spencer, IA, and many nieces and nephews. Sophie is preceded in death by her parents Roelf and Jurendien; husband, Merlin; infant son, Michael Stoterau on March 13, 1966; one granddaughter, Sonja Flaggan; three brothers George Meyer, Roelf "Ralph" Jr. Meyer, and Henry Meyer; and five sisters, Hilda Kadolph, Henrietta Haase, Jeanette Barents, Annie Yotter and Mary Knorr. Blessed be the memory of Sophie Meyer Stoterau.
