A Celebration of Life Service for Syd Malchow, age 65, of Lakefield, will be held Thursday, January 12th at 10:30 AM at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Lakefield, with Pastor Dale Hedstrom officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lakefield.

A time of visitation and gathering will be held Wednesday, January 11th from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Lakefield. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the Celebration of Life on Thursday, January 12th from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church in rural Lakefield.

Syd Malchow passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 7th at Sunset Cottages in Worthington, MN, surrounded by family, after a long battle with cancer.

Sydney John Malchow was born to Ernest and Geneva (Mosley) Malchow on September 8, 1957, in Lakefield, Minnesota. He was the 7th of 10 children in the family. Syd was baptized on October 6, 1957, and confirmed on March 29, 1971, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lakefield. He graduated from Lakefield High School in the class of 1975.

Syd continued his education at the Jackson Area Vocational Technical Institute and graduated in 1977, as a Mechanical Draftsman. Following graduation, he moved to Rochester, Minnesota and was employed at Telex Communications. Syd married his high school sweetheart, Nadine Rossow, on September 15, 1979, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Lakefield. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Amanda and Gina.

In 1984, they moved to Lakefield and became managers of the Hi-Lo Club and then purchased the restaurant in 1989. Together, Syd and Nadine managed Hi-Lo Restaurant and Catering for 33 years, until they sold the business in 2021. Syd took great pride in making his famous Hi-Lo Club potato salad. He enjoyed baking buns and preparing a variety of meats for buffets and catering. Syd took pleasure in assisting with the annual turkey suppers at his church.

Syd was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and was active in the community. He was Chairman of Jackson County Ducks Unlimited for many years and became a Life Sponsor of the local chapter. He was on the Lakefield Economic Development Association Board for over 20 years, where he served as Chairman several times.

Syd loved spending time and playing cards with his grandchildren, as well as traveling. He cherished family gatherings, and rarely turned down a good bowl of ice cream.

In August 2020, Syd was diagnosed with colon cancer. While facing these challenges, he always leaned on his faith. With the love and support from family and community, he continued to maintain a positive attitude. He was an inspiration to many.

Syd Malchow, age 65, entered eternal rest on January 7, 2023, at the Sunset Cottage in Worthington, surrounded by his loving family.

Left to cherish Syd's memory are his wife and partner of 43 years, Nadine Malchow of Lakefield; daughters, Amanda (Derek) Frodermann and Gina (Scott) Myers; five grandchildren, Genevieve and Ian Frodermann, Joshua, Julia and Gentry Myers; siblings, Louise (Jacey) Peterson, James (Deb) Malchow, Ern (Trudy) Malchow, Robert (Candy) Malchow, Susan (Paul) Bass, Beth (Ray Hostetler) Malchow, Laurel (David) Drexler, and Ann (Doug) Lesch; mother-in-law, Shirley Rossow; brothers-in-law, Dan (Becky) Rossow and Kevin (Stacy) Rossow; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Syd was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Geneva Malchow; his stepfather, Harry Parkins; father-in-law, Gene Rossow; and sister, Carol Malchow.
