Terena Roll Bottema was born April 19, 1916 to Peter and Alice (Bruns) Roll in Jeffers, MN, the youngest of 8 children. She attended country school in the Jeffers area until 3rd grade when the family moved to Bingham Lake in 1924. Terena attended Bingham Lake schools till 10th grade. She worked for her older siblings whenever they needed an extra hand on the farm or house as well as other neighbors when called upon. On February 7, 1942, she married Ben Bottema at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church rectory in Windom. This marriage was blessed with two children. They started their farming career west of Windom with the Rae family. In 1947, they moved to Lakeside Township, south of Bingham Lake and remained there until retirement in 1974. They built a home in Bingham Lake where Terena enjoyed a large garden and created many smaller flower gardens. She attended the Bingham Lake Methodist Church, serving on the funeral committee and women's groups, until it closed in 1997. Always willing to help, Terena made herself available when a call came in for a friend or relative in need. It was very common for Terena and her two sisters to be seen at an event or just out shopping together. The three of them visited with each other every day either by phone or in person. The joy of being a grandmother was a highlight of Terena's life. She nicknamed herself "Poky Grandma" due to physical ailments that slowed her pace. It had its advantages, however. She always had time for a card game, a picture to color, or puzzle to put together. And of course, chocolate chip cookies (aka Granny cookies) were generally available. Following the death of Ben in 2001 and her son David in 2008, she was able to remain in her home with the help of her daughter's family until 2011 when a move to the Sogge Good Samaritan Home in Windom took place. She spent her early days reading and visiting with friends by phone. Later, with diminishing eyesight and weaker body strength, she proved to everyone that a person can still be content despite difficult circumstances. God saw she was getting tired and took her by the hand on January 17, 2020 after allowing her 103 years on earth. Her grateful family includes her daughter & son-in-law, Kathy & Nanno Schoneman of Bingham Lake MN, grandchildren Laura (Brett) Tostenson, Holden and Reagan of Highmore SD and William Schoneman (Jordan Barton) of Ellendale ND as well as several nieces and nephews. Welcoming her at the gates of heaven were her husband Ben, son David, sisters Jennie & Gertie Dunkelberger, and brothers Hank, Bruno and John. Blessed be her memory.
