Viola Frances (Newcomer) Winkel was born August 23, 1916 to William and Ruth (Wise) Newcomer in Heron Lake, MN. She was baptized on April 8, 1928 at the Methodist Church in Heron Lake and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Lakefield on May 5, 1940. She attended Heron Lake Public Schools and graduated in the class of 1934. After school, Viola helped on the family farm and then met the love of her life Lester Winkel and they were united in marriage on February 27, 1938. This union blessed them with 3 children, Warren, Wesley and Sheila. They farmed in Heron Lake until 1959 when they purchased a farm in Comfrey. They continued to live in Comfrey at the farm until Lester's passing in 1971. While living in Comfrey, Viola was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield and she was a substitute Sunday school teacher and chair of the Ladies' Aid. Viola then moved to Windom where she worked at Fingerhut as a seamstress until her retirement in 1978. Viola was a member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom where she participated in many different organizations and groups such as the LWML, Golden Age, quilting group and worked in the office. Viola also handmade linens for the altar and baptismal napkins. Viola was also very active in her community and had a heart of gold and truly found joy in helping others. She was a member of the Senior Center, RSVP and received the Mayor's Medal of Honor for Service by Elders. Viola went to her heavenly home Monday, May 18, 2020 at the Windom Area Health Hospital. Viola is survived by her son, Warren (Sandra) Winkel of Windom; daughter, Sheila (Clare) Luxford of Minnetonka; daughter-in-law, Anita Winkel of Windom; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester Winkel in 1971; her son, Wesley Winkel in 2002 and nine siblings.
