Wally was a one-of-a-kind man. He had a zest for life, a mischievous nature, and a deep love for family and his abundance of friends.
Walter "Wally" John Ulbricht was born on February 23, 1933, in Rost Township, Jackson County, Minnesota, to Feodor and Anna (Voehl) Ulbricht. He was a lifelong member of the St Paul Lutheran Church at Rost.
After graduating from Lakefield High School, he volunteered for the draft and served his country for two years during the Korean Conflict.
Two weeks after he returned from his time in the Army, he married the love of his life, Meredith Wiese, on October 29, 1955. The couple was blessed with four children, Linda, Lori, Kristine and Scott.
They moved into their homestead in Rost township, and they worked side by side on the farm, raising corn, soybeans, cattle and hogs until they retired after forty years in agriculture. They continued living at the homestead for an additional 23 years before moving to Lakeview Assisted Living in Heron Lake. They were very involved in their community and in many of their kids' activities, always making new friends wherever they went.
Wally had many passions, including Minnesota sports, playing cards, golfing, bowling, hunting and fishing.
Wally was one of the founders of the Minnesota State Pork Chop Open which is now entering its 50th year. He took great pride in "introducing" golfers on the first tee.
Wally and Meredy prioritized rich relationships and became friends with everyone they met. They also had a gift of hospitality. They hosted many social events at the farm and after retirement began splitting their time between the farm and their winter home in Thousand Palms, California. Having an open-door policy was a part of their life and they hosted many card parties, happy hours and loved to celebrate life with their family and friends wherever they were.
Life for Wally changed drastically on February 19, 2020, when his wife of 64 years passed away. Despite Wally's loss, his love for Jesus, positive attitude, playful grin and sense of humor continued until the day he died. On August 28, 2024, Wally passed away peacefully at Lakeview Assisted Living.
Left to cherish Wally's memory, are his children, Linda (Kermit) Fees of Miller, NE, Lori (Jay) Mickelson of Windom, MN, Kristine (Ken) Kuhn of Northfield, MN, and Scott Ulbricht of Vadnais Heights, MN; grandchildren, Jesse and Sarah Fees and children, Nolan and Luther, Allison (Fees) and Joel Varah and children Evelyn, Hudson, and Grant, Randall Fees and wife, Emily Baker and children, Roscoe and Orson, Roxanna (Fees) and Matt Carrizales, Brady and Kristy Mickelson and children, Brynn, Addy, Henry, and Beau, Michelle (Mickelson) and Jesse Weber, and children, Wacey, Reese, Andy, Mick and Wren, Elise (Mickelson) and Rick Baum Jr. and children, Ruth and Set, Kyle Kuhn and wife, Kelsey Guldan and daughter, Grace, Kevin and Kayla Kuhn and son, Kip, Moriah (Ulbricht) and Paul Ripplinger and daughter, Noa, and Luke Ulbricht; as well as many other relatives and friends.
