Winifred Mary Hoppert was born on March, 8, 1920 in Cuba City, Wisconsin to Harry Edward Evans and wife Miriam Mae (Howard), recent immigrants from London, England. In April 1924 Miriam died after a long illness where in the hospital she was cared for by Emma Caroline Conner of Sterling, Illinois. In December 1924, Miss Conner married Mr. Evans, thus becoming a much admired and beloved second mother to Winifred. Since her father was a Methodist minister, Winifred went to a number of different schools, the last year being the high school in Spring Valley, Minnesota from which school she graduated in 1937. In 1941, she graduated from Hamline University, St. Paul, with a degree in British Literature and minors in Latin, French, and library science. Her teaching career began in Sherburn, Minnesota that same year. In 1944 she began teaching in International Falls, Minnesota where in 1945 she met Albert C. Hoppert from Wood River, Illinois. They were married by her father at Spring Valley on August 4, 1946. Winifred continued to teach there until January, 1967 when Mr. Hoppert began a position as director of Family Services for Cottonwood County. From 1967-1972 she taught half time at Jeffers after which she transferred to a similar position in Lakefield high school, from which position she retired in 1982. Mr. Hoppert died in 1989. Winifred was a member of Order of the Eastern Star holding various offices over the years. Before and after her marriage, she was active in the women's work of the Episcopal church during which times she served as local president of ECW at both Holy Trinity, International Falls and Good Shepherd, Windom. She served also as regional president and as a member of the diocesan women's board. She belonged to Interlochen civic club, Windom Area Hospital Auxiliary where she was especially active, and on both city and county library boards. She was also involved with the scholarship program at the local high school. Books and music were an integral part of her life. Winifred served as church organist for various congregations for over 80 years and often played piano when needed at events. Survivors include her brother, Dr. John Evans of Janesville, WI; four nieces and one nephew, the children of her brother Dr. John Evans; and three nephews, the children of Mr. (Hoppert's sister Marie Haunschild) and husband Irvin of East Alton, Illinois. She is preceded in death by her husband, Albert C. Hoppert; parents, Harry and Miriam (Howard) Evans; step-mother, Emma Caroline (Conner) Evans; sister-in-law, Joan Evans.
