Winton James Schwartz was born in Windom, MN on May 14, 1926 and passed away July 22, 2021 at the age of 95. He graduated from Windom High School in 1944 (being the only one to pass the Navy V-6 examination given in high school) and immediately reported for duty in the US Navy on June 5, 1944. He was sent to radio technicians school and served on the USS Appalachia & USS Bristol. After his discharge in 1946, he married Shirley E. Gould in Windom on November 17, 1946. His career was mostly as an auto mechanic, where he worked at Nelson's Garage and Stephens GM Town in Windom, finishing up his full-time work as a night maintenance worker at Caldwell Packing in Windom. Retired from full-time work in 1986, he worked part-time as a maintenance worker at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom for many years.
Winton was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; parents, William and Ethel Schwartz (née Anderson); brother, Frederic; and infant daughter Karla. He is survived by sons David Schwartz (Diane Olson) and Alan Schwartz (Beverly), and daughters Marie Schwartz (Sherri Weiss) and Janet Bowlin. Winton was also a grandfather to Terry Schwartz, Lindsey Anderson (née Schwartz), Jennifer Solt (née Olson), and Justin Olson; and great-grandfather to Hailey Schwartz, Jase Anderson, Bentley Anderson, Tylor Solt, and Aden Solt.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 29 at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom and interment will be Friday, July 30 at 9:00 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.
